Abstract
As a preliminary study of developing a screening tool for obsessive-compulsive disorders in children and adolescents, 44-item self-report form of Leyton Obsessional Inventory-Child version(LOI-CV) was administered to 183 3rd grade middle school boys and 133 1rd grade high school girls in Busan. More trhan 80% of the subjects responded to the self-report instructions properly.
Obsessions were very common in Korean students also : mean(SD) number of 'Yes' responses is 13(7) in boys and 16(6) in girls with Interference score of 10.6(9.1) and 12.6(10.0), respectively. The most common 'Yes' responses included obsessions conceming about contaminations, family members get hurt and lack of sureness. In contrast, uncommon responses consisted of compulsions related with school works. Though interference score did not show gender difference, girls reported more 'Yes' and higher Resistance score than boys.
14 factors were extracted on principal component factor analysis : items consisting Hoarding and Magic games were exactly matched with Berg et al's(1986) subscales and items of Dangerous objects and Cleanliness & Tidiness were quite comparable. Others were converged into forms(obsessions, avoidance or compulsions) or contents(contaminations, unfortunate accidents, conscience, saving, etc). It was suggested that two sets of subscales evaluating form and content of obsessive-compulsive symptoms independently might be helpful to increase consistency.
While none of 3 parameters of LOI-CV correlated with students' records at school, inverted U shaped relationship between number of 'Yes' responses and school records was observed on non-linear regression analysis in subsets of subjects whose records were 'F'. This finding might implicate too low or too high obsessive trend could worsen students' work performance.
